What does it mean to have a stereotype
A stereotype is an old word for the metal plate that we used to press writings onto paper when printing books or newspapers.
It was a useful idea for when you needed to make a lot of the same texts very fast. But the word also has a social and cultural meaning. It means that we use the same way of thinking to apply to all the people of a group. For example: Most police officers are men and they like to eat dougnuts. Most old women like to talk about second world war and smell of cigars You can also call it a generalization. Now, everyone, write down three stereotypes that they have heard somewhere before. Questions for the class: Have you ever been stereotyped as a young person? Have you ever stereotyped anyone else? Did you regret it? |
